  • Amazon Sword is a very popular aquatic plant among the freshwater hobbyists due to its hardiness and gorgeous green coloration. It is native to Brazil and in nature it occurs in lakes, river, swamps and wet ground of the Amazon basin where it is found growing submersed in 50 to 100 cm deep stagnant to slow-flowing water. At present, it is now widely cultivated on farms around the world. This plant can be placed in the midground or background, depending on its height. It can grow partially submersed condition and makes it a good addition to terrariums as well as the traditional planted tank. It is easy to grow and it produces lush green foliage that looks quite attractive in the aquarium.

  • The Rosette Sword (Echinodorus parviflorus) is a more compact sword and is beautiful as a foreground or mid-ground plant. They have bright green leaves with a hammered-metal-like texture very different from most other swords. This variety is one of the hardiest swords and grows to an average height of 1.5-6 inches. Under subpar lighting, it remains shorter in height. "Sword Plants" come primarily from the Echinodorus genus and are marsh or bog plants from the tropical western hemisphere (North, South and Central America as well as some islands in the region). While there are around 3 scientifically accepted species, many species are cross-bred and propagated by hobbyists and nurseries to create numerous variants and hybrids. While swords may grow emerged in the wild (with their leaves out of the water), they are well adapted to submerged life in the aquarium as well. Emerged plants grow flowers, while submerged plants will reproduce by sending out runners to grow new plants. Most swords need high lighting to thrive. They also benefit from a nutrient-rich substrate and iron and CO2 supplements, especially in heavily planted aquariums.

  • The Kleiner Bar Sword is a hybrid between Echinodorus barthii and Echinodorus uruguayensis, which gives the adult leaves their red coloration. If the conditions are not ideal, the plant grows more slowly, a bit smaller, and the deep red coloration of the leaves will turn more rust in color. This species is amphibious and will grow either submersed or partially submersed. Requiring little attention after the initial planting, the Kleiner Bar Sword is a great plant for beginners. The Kleiner Bar Sword requires moderate to high lighting, approximately 3 watts per gallon provided by full spectrum (5000-7000K) bulbs. The temperature of the water should be between 72°-82°F, with an alkalinity of 3-8 dKH and a neutral pH. The Kleiner Bar Sword propagates by rhizomes or adventitious shoots that grow off of leaves. A prolific plant under most circumstances, the development of a new leaf once a week is not uncommon. Approximate Purchase Size: Small: 6" to 8"

  • The Echinodorus ‘Barthii’ is a decorative and beautiful plant for large aquariums. It becomes 25-50 cm tall and the whole rosette 20-30 cm wide. The leaves change colour from dark-red in the youngest leaves to dark-green in the oldest. The colour develops well when the light intensity is high and there are sufficient micro-nutrients in the aquarium. A nutritious bottom and CO2 addition promote growth. This plant takes a lot of light from plants underneath, so it must be pruned occasionally. It used to be sold as "Double Red".
