A good planted tank does not need pressurized CO2, expensive lighting, or a daily testing routine to look intentional. This low tech aquascape example uses a 20-gallon aquarium, forgiving plants, and a simple riverbank-style layout that gives beginners a realistic path to a healthy, attractive aquarium.

The goal is not to force rapid growth. It is to create a stable planted aquarium where the plants grow steadily, the fish have shelter, and maintenance stays manageable. That makes low tech aquascaping especially well suited to first-time planted tank owners, apartment aquariums, and hobbyists who want a relaxing display rather than another complicated project.

A Low Tech Aquascape Example: The Planted Riverbank

Picture an open sandy area across the front of the tank, a group of smooth stones rising off-center, and dense green planting that gets taller toward the back. The open foreground creates depth, while the plants and hardscape create a natural focal point without crowding the aquarium.

For this example, place the main rock group about one-third of the way from either side rather than directly in the middle. Use one larger anchor stone and several smaller stones that share a similar color and texture. Arrange them so they look settled into the substrate, with their bases partially buried. A few pieces of branchy driftwood can extend from the stones toward the surface, but keep the hardscape restrained. In a low tech tank, less material often makes plant placement and cleaning easier.

This layout works because it gives each plant a job. Short plants frame the open front, medium plants soften the rocks, and tall plants hide the back wall and equipment. It also leaves swimming room for a small community of peaceful fish.

What You Need for This Setup

A 20-gallon long aquarium is ideal because its wide footprint gives you room to build depth. A standard 20-gallon tank can work too, but avoid making the planting overly dense on day one. You need a reliable filter with gentle to moderate flow, an adjustable aquarium heater if your livestock requires one, and a basic full-spectrum LED aquarium light.

Keep the light modest. Start at six hours per day, then increase to seven or eight hours only after the tank is stable and algae is under control. Strong light without added CO2 can outpace plant growth and give algae an advantage.

For the substrate, use a nutrient-rich planted aquarium soil if you want easier root feeding and a darker, natural look. A sand cap is optional, especially in the open foreground. Inert gravel also works, but rooted plants will need root tabs from the beginning. Whichever route you choose, make the substrate deeper in the back, around 2 to 3 inches, and slope it gradually toward the front. That small elevation change makes the aquascape feel larger.

A practical plant selection includes:

  • Anubias nana petite or regular Anubias for rock and wood
  • Java fern for shaded hardscape areas
  • Cryptocoryne wendtii for the midground
  • Dwarf sagittaria or pygmy chain sword along the front edges
  • Water wisteria, hornwort, or Vallisneria for the background
These species tolerate lower light, do not require injected CO2, and offer different leaf shapes and heights. They are also flexible enough to handle the normal adjustments that happen while a new aquarium matures.

Plant Each Area With a Purpose

Start at the back of the aquarium. Plant stems of water wisteria in small groups rather than one straight hedge. Leave a little space between groups so water can move through the leaves. Wisteria grows quickly and uses nutrients efficiently, which can be helpful during the first few months when algae pressure is often highest. Vallisneria is another strong option if you prefer long, grass-like leaves, though it can spread through runners once established.

Place Cryptocoryne wendtii around the lower edges of the main stone group. Its brown, green, or reddish tones can make a low tech layout look more layered without demanding high light. Crypts can melt after being moved from their previous growing conditions. This is common, not a reason to pull them out. Leave healthy roots in place, remove decaying leaves, and allow new submerged leaves to grow back.

Attach Anubias and Java fern to stone or driftwood with thread, plant-safe glue, or a gentle wedge between hardscape pieces. Do not bury their rhizomes, which are the thick horizontal stems from which leaves and roots grow. Buried rhizomes are likely to rot. Their slower growth is useful near the focal point, where they provide a durable, clean look without constant trimming.

Use dwarf sagittaria or pygmy chain sword sparingly around the transition between the hardscape and the open foreground. A true carpet is possible in some low tech aquariums, but it is slower and less predictable than in a CO2-injected tank. Think of these plants as an irregular grassy border, not a perfectly trimmed lawn. That expectation will save frustration.

Set the Tank Up Without Creating an Algae Problem

Once the hardscape and plants are in place, fill the aquarium slowly over a bowl or plastic bag so the substrate does not shift. Run the filter and heater continuously, and use a dechlorinator whenever adding tap water. If the aquarium is new, cycle it fully before adding fish. Plants help, but they do not replace the need for a properly established biological filter.

For the first two weeks, keep the light at six hours daily. Avoid adding a heavy fish load right away. A few algae-eating animals can be useful later, but they should never be the main algae-control plan. Light duration, reasonable feeding, regular water changes, and healthy plant growth do more work than any cleanup crew.

Fertilize lightly but consistently. A complete all-in-one liquid fertilizer once or twice a week is often enough for this type of setup, depending on plant mass, fish stocking, and water changes. Add root tabs beneath crypts, dwarf sagittaria, and other heavy root feeders every few months. More fertilizer is not automatically better. If you see algae increasing while plants are not growing well, check lighting time and water flow before simply dosing more.

The Maintenance Rhythm That Keeps It Low Tech

A low tech aquascape should be easy to maintain, not ignored. Plan on a weekly 25% to 35% water change, especially during the first few months. Use that time to remove damaged leaves, wipe the front glass, and inspect the hardscape for trapped debris.

Trim fast-growing background plants before they shade the rest of the aquarium. With water wisteria, remove older stems at the base or cut and replant healthy tops if you want a fuller group. Keep the open foreground open. A little natural spread looks good, but a crowded front glass quickly makes the layout lose its sense of depth.

Filter cleaning should be gentle and occasional. When flow slows, rinse filter media in a bucket of removed aquarium water, not untreated tap water. Preserve as much beneficial bacteria as possible, and do not replace every piece of media at once unless it is falling apart.

Adjust the Design as the Tank Grows

The best part of this low tech aquascape example is that it can evolve. Once the plants settle in, you may decide the back needs more height, the rock group needs a little more cover, or the foreground needs more open space. Make one change at a time and give the aquarium a few weeks to respond.

If you want more color, add a small group of Cryptocoryne with reddish leaves rather than choosing demanding red stem plants. If you want a softer woodland look, add more Java fern or a light amount of moss to the wood. If you want less maintenance, choose slower growers and accept a more minimal design.
