Start With a Schedule That Fits Your Tank

Before setting reminders, consider your aquarium’s age, lighting, plant mass, fish stocking, and CO2 method. A newly planted tank behaves differently than a mature one. During the first month, plants are establishing roots and adjusting from their growing conditions, while the aquarium is still building beneficial bacteria. That makes early algae control and water changes especially useful.

A mature aquarium with plenty of healthy plants is usually more forgiving. Still, heavily stocked tanks, tanks with strong lights, and aquariums using injected CO2 need more consistency than a lightly stocked beginner setup. The goal is balance, not chasing perfect test results every day.

For most freshwater planted tanks, use this basic cadence: observe daily, maintain weekly, trim and evaluate every two to four weeks, and clean equipment monthly. Adjust from there based on what your aquarium shows you.

Daily Planted Tank Maintenance Checks

Daily care should take a minute or two. Look at the tank when the lights first come on or during feeding. Healthy plants are not always perfectly spotless, but you should know what normal growth looks like in your aquarium.

If you use injected CO2, confirm that the system is operating on schedule and that fish are not breathing rapidly near the surface. CO2 should begin before the lights come on and stop before lights out, but timing depends on circulation, plant demand, and tank size.

Watch fish behavior and scan plant leaves for new holes, melting, yellowing, or algae. A single older leaf fading is normal. Several new leaves turning pale may point to a nutrient issue, while dark green algae on slow-growing plants can suggest too much light or an imbalance between light, carbon, and nutrients.

Feed fish only what they can reasonably finish. Uneaten food is not plant fertilizer in the useful sense. It becomes waste, which can raise nutrient load and contribute to algae if maintenance cannot keep pace.

Change Water Without Overcleaning

For most planted tanks, replace 20 to 30 percent of the water each week. This removes dissolved waste and helps reset the nutrient balance without causing sudden shifts for fish and beneficial bacteria. In a new tank, a heavily stocked aquarium, or a tank fighting algae, two smaller water changes per week may be a better short-term approach.

Use a gravel vacuum lightly around open substrate areas where waste collects. Do not aggressively churn planted soil or pull up roots. In a heavily planted aquarium, much of the debris will settle beneath plants and be processed by the system. Focus on visible buildup, dead leaves, and areas with weak water movement.

Always match replacement water reasonably close to the aquarium temperature and use a water conditioner when needed. Stable conditions matter more than making tiny water parameter adjustments every week.

Dose Fertilizer Consistently

Plants need macronutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, along with trace elements including iron. Fish waste supplies some nutrients, but it is rarely a complete plant nutrition plan, especially in tanks with fast-growing stems, red plants, carpeting plants, or a high plant-to-fish ratio.

Dose an all-in-one liquid fertilizer after your water change or divide the weekly amount across several days. Either method can work. The better choice is the one you will remember. Root-feeding plants such as sword plants, crypts, and many bulb plants also benefit from root tabs placed near their root zones every few months.

Avoid the common mistake of stopping fertilizer because algae appears. Starving plants often makes the problem worse because algae can take advantage when plant growth slows. Instead, look at the full picture: light duration, CO2 consistency, circulation, feeding, and how much plant mass your tank has.

Remove Decaying Leaves and Spot-Clean Algae

Use aquarium scissors to remove yellow, transparent, or heavily algae-covered leaves. Trim at the base of the leaf stem when possible instead of leaving a decaying piece behind. This keeps the tank looking clean and prevents dying plant material from adding unnecessary organic waste.

Wipe the front glass and use a soft brush or toothbrush on hardscape if needed. Spot-cleaning once a week is far easier than waiting until algae has covered every surface. Avoid scrubbing every rock and leaf to a sterile finish. A small amount of natural biofilm is normal, especially in newer tanks.

Every Two to Four Weeks: Trim for Better Growth

Fast-growing stem plants can quickly shade everything below them. When stems reach the surface, trim the top section above a healthy node and replant the cuttings if you want a fuller group. Remove bare lower portions if they have lost leaves in the shade.

Foreground plants need occasional shaping too. Trim carpeting plants lightly and gradually rather than cutting them down all at once. A severe trim can leave a carpet struggling to photosynthesize, and loose clippings can clog filter intakes or decay in hidden corners.

This is also a good time to thin floating plants. Floaters are excellent at using excess nutrients, but they can block too much light from plants below. Leave enough open surface area for gas exchange and for your lower plants to receive usable light.

As you trim, assess plant placement. A plant that repeatedly melts or stays stunted may be in the wrong zone. Move shade-tolerant plants under taller growth, place stronger light-demanding stems where they will not be shaded, and give rosette plants enough substrate space for their roots.

Monthly Equipment Care

Once a month, inspect equipment instead of cleaning everything automatically. Rinse filter sponges or mechanical media only when flow has noticeably slowed. Use old tank water removed during a water change, not untreated tap water, to protect beneficial bacteria.

Check intake tubes, impellers, tubing, and circulation equipment for buildup. Clear clogged intakes and make sure water is moving across the aquarium rather than only at the surface. Good circulation distributes nutrients and CO2 while reducing debris pockets where algae can gain a foothold.

Test lights and timers as well. Most planted tanks do well with six to eight hours of light per day. If algae is persistent, shorten the photoperiod before increasing it, even if the plants seem slow. More light raises demand for every other resource, including nutrients and carbon.

When to Change the Routine

A schedule is a baseline, not a rulebook. Increase water changes temporarily if fish waste is high, water looks cloudy, or algae is spreading. Trim more often when stems are shading lower plants. Reduce lighting if algae grows faster than plants, especially in a new aquarium.
